Carter's Dress Hack

I've been on the hunt for the perfect Easter dress to complete the sister duo so while at the mall I checked Carter's.  I don't shop there very often (probably because I'm not on their email list so they don't lure me the way the Gap daily promotions tend too) but I had a gift card and thought what the heck!

While I was looking around I stumbled on this adorable dress and fell in love only to find out the largest size it came in was 24 months.  Short of having another baby, just for this dress, I bought it for a friend's new baby and pouted about it for the rest of the day.

Part way home, I remembered my husband used to have a shirt like this.  He went through a period where he was splitting the sleeves of all of his shirts right near the elbow so I kept them thinking I could do something with them one day.  Fast forward two years and I was thrilled to find this exact shirt.  Tried it on my model, did a few calculations and went to work.   Here's the best part, kept my money in my pocket (even though it's 50% off currently and only $12) and made my girl a free dress from her Daddy's shirt!

I started by removing the arms where they were attached and using a pattern I am familiar with to cut out the body and sleeves.  One of the tutorials on pinterest said to use a dress as a guide adding seam allowance but I was not comfortable with that.  I used Heidi and Finn's Pumpkin Spice Pattern  which I had pattern tested (and apparently never blogged about...huh) because it has a similar shape to how I wanted the dress to come out.  I will say I did have to adjust the body a little bit and make it a bit smaller for the arms to fit nicely but that is probably due to the rough job I did cutting it out.  The top section was cut all in one piece so I cut down only the right side of the photo and then straight across the bottom and then flipped the pattern piece to the other side and did the same thing.  I made sure that the top portion was about 1/2 an inch longer than I wanted to allow for the attaching of the skirt.  That left just attaching the sides of the body for this portion to be complete.

I used the sleeves for the sleeves (imagine that?).  Again I used the sleeves from the pumpkin spice pattern  but adjusted the length to my preference.  I knew I wanted them long enough for a small roll at the bottom.  To accomplish this I used 4 sleeve pieces (2 for each sleeve) and attached them at the bottom then sewed the sides together and flipped it inside out to make a tube.  This left a raw edge at the top of the sleeve where it would be attached to the top of the dress. Before I flipped it though I attached the button packet (seen below) to one side of the sleeve which would become the inside of the sleeve.  I ironed this all smooth and attached the sleeve.

My shirt had a pocket but the scale was too large for my dress.  Luckily my front and back body pieces were short enough to finish above the pocket while still also leaving enough length below the pocket for the skirt.  I cut the bottom about an inch longer than I wanted the finished length to be then cinched it to the same size as the top.  When attaching the body to the skirt  I ironed the raw edge of the top up 1/2 an inch and unfolded it to attach the right sides of the button packet together in the front.  I did this first and then adjusted my cinching to ensure the skirt had an even look.  I then attached the skirt to the body with the two right sides facing and raw edges lined up.  There should be a crease where you ironed right above this.  Tuck the skirt up and pull the body down and top stitch into place.

In my opinion, what made this look so professional is that I kept and used most of the original construction.  For example.  Below is a picture of the button packet on the sleeve, I removed it, cut it slightly larger than I wanted it, turned the raw edge inside and top stitched it closed.  The collar, the buttons in the front, the panel in the back and the bottom seam, are all from the original shirt so they are neat and tidy without doing a thing.  That made this a super quick easy sew.

Here's my final product!

I'll have to add some other photos of it on my girl, but they are currently on my husbands phone.

I'd love to hear if this helped or what you were able to create!  Happy sewing!

April Fools Baby

This weekend my sweet niece turned two!
I remember when I heard my sister was in labour with her.
It was two weeks early, so Mr. D convinced me it was an April Fools joke.

No, joke...this sweet girl was on her way!

We love this sweet girl to absolute bits!
The Boss and her act like twins separated for years whenever they see each other...
even if it's only been a day.

My sister did a pink and red party for her sweet girl.
It was fun and Girly, just like Little A.

We had so much fun.
We ate great food and enjoyed sweet treats.
The Boss enjoyed eating the turret of the castle cake.
She really couldn't get enough of eating cake out of the cone.

Happy Birthday Little A!  We love you so so much!

What She Wore...

A number of bloggers post weekly on what they wore.
I'm not going to lie,
I enjoy reading others, but feel a little in adequate at times.

The truth is, there are many times that I go out with The Boss and feel embarrassed.
She looks fabulous and I'm dressed like...a Mom.
Rather than deny her inner model, I thought I would embrace it.

Here's to The Boss and "What She Wore"!

Hat, H&M
Coat, Zara
Skinny Cordorys, Gap
Brown Boots, Target

Can we also take a moment to discuss my little poser? My goodness, who does this child belong to?

Christmas Shopping for a Toddler Girl...

Christmas is my MOST favourite time of year.
I love it even more than Fall!
I think its because, unlike any other time of year, we make time to spend time with family, friends and co-workers to celebrate the season.
Even though The Hubby is American, and it is against his inner core to start celebrating before Thanksgiving weekend, I have softened him a little so we start Christmas music and Christmas shopping as soon as Halloween is over.
He even lets me decorate the weekend before Thanksgiving.
What a guy!

All year long I have seen things I want to buy for the girl but have been holding out for Christmas.
It makes it more fun right?
I know thinking of ideas can sometimes be tricky so I thought I would share some of the beautiful things I am thinking of for the girl.
She will likely not be getting all of them but here is a starting point.

Happy Shopping!

Fall Fashions Re-purposed

Fall really crept up on me this year.  The weather literally switched from hot summer days to crisp cool and sometimes down right chilly nights.  Normally I am so excited to slowly build The Boss' wardrobe but this year it happened too fast.  We got caught without our tights on.

I was thrilled when I saw this tutorial posted on Make it and Love it.

I always love Ashley's projects and  one of my favourite outfits The Boss had last Fall was a gray dress that looked very similar to this. I had the perfect old sweater dress from Victoria's Secret to use and  I love the idea of re-purposing.  I set to work on her dress much to the dismay of the Hubby.  Apparently he loved the dress I cut up...sorry Hubby, it was so two years ago.

I followed her directions, which we so easy to follow and was surprised at how great this dress turned out.  There was only one thing I was not happy with, the neck.  Some how in my cutting, cropping and inexperience I made the neck way too big.  Have a look.

So I opened the neck and strung thin elastic threw and tightened it up.  It worked perfectly!

Proof it was a sweater dress before, here's the label and all. It was a cowl neck style hence the larger hem at the bottom of the dress.  I actually really like how this looks in the completed project.

This dress is cozy, soft and versatile.  I am thinking about adding a flower or something that clips on and off to spice it up a little.  All and all a great dress for free and the perfect outfit for a trip to the doctor.  Gotta love cold season!

Baby Tights

The weather is turning cool hear and so las weekend I had to dash out to the store to buy The Boss tights to wear to church.  Last year I posted about Baby Tights here, but it's that time of year again and I think this is hugely important for Mama's of Baby Girls to pick the right pair! There is nothing more annoying than saggy tights...think about it, when your tights sag you feel like you have filled your pants, so uncomfortable.  Now, think about if you are wearing a diaper and likely have filled your pants...ugh terrible.  No wonder babies in tights are crabby.  I think there's no reason girls can't look fabulous and be comfortable while doing it.

So incase you missed my first post on this or don't feel like clicking here, these are my tips!

The key to great tights is not the store you purchase them from it's what the tights are made of.  I have purchased two very different pairs of tights from the same store and love one and hate the other. Here is what I've learned.   The tights that fit the best are mainly cotton (70%), with spandex (25%) and a small amount of nylon (5%).  The tights I hate have lots of nylon and lycra.  My favourites also have the shape of feet cut out this helps them to cling to the Boss' legs and fit comfortably.  The mainly lycra ones bag on the top of her feet instead of clinging making them baggy all over.  When you find a pair your thinking about buying flip them over and read through the materials.

Here are little girl tights I am LOVING this season!

The Gap has really done a great job with their tights.  I love the colour of these dark violet tights, and these cute striped ones.  I also love the ruffles on the bum.  The Boss had a pair of these last year, they were awesome.

.
I also LOVE these from Target.  They only go up to 12 M but if The Boss was younger I would for sure be picking these up.

What Baby tights are you loving?

Happy Bee-day

One of my good friends recently celebrated this sweet girl's first birthday.  Isn't that the cutest little face ever?  I remember clearly the day Julie and her husband called to tell us she was pregnant with Baby A.  We were just a few months pregnant ourselves and so excited for their growing family.  One year later, they are celebrating their sweet girl with a Bee themed party.

She made this adorable flag banner.  It reads "Happy 'Bee' day" how cute!  You can find a tutorial for a flag banner here.  She just sewed her triangles onto a ribbon and then hot glued white felt letters on.  She said she started it a week before the party.  Did I mention she is a busy mother of two?  How in the world do you pull this off when you have two kiddies to take care of?

She made Baby A's dress and headband as well.  The dress is a pillowcase dress with the bee made out of felt and sewn on.  The bee and flower on her headband were just hot glued together and pinned on.  You can find a tutorial for the dress here or here.  I love how the yellow just pops.  Baby A looks gorgeous in this colour.  I think her Mommy is pretty cute too!
